COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – First responders lined overpasses and residential roads from Dayton to Mount Gilead on Wednesday morning and afternoon, paying tribute to a sheriff’s deputy who was fatally shot on Memorial Day.
The coming home procession began about 10:50 a.m. in Montgomery County for Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer.
Sherrer, 31, was involved in a shootout at a residence south of Marengo, a small community some 35 miles north of Columbus, where he responded to a domestic disturbance call and found himself alone confronting an armed man.
His body was transferred to the Montgomery County coroner after his death. The route to Mount Gilead is about 120 miles and included portions of Interstates 70, 71 and 270 in Columbus.

The procession began at the coroner’s office in Dayton, and an escort headed east toward Columbus. The caravan went north around Columbus on I-270 during the lunch hour before joining I-71 to State Route 61 for Mount Gilead.
A portion of the procession passed through Hilliard, and officers with the police department were on hand to pay their respects.
“We stand with Morrow County, we stand with the sheriff there, we stand with his people and we know it’s like a family, and we know it would feel like to feel that loss so we want to show them we’re here and we want to honor Daniel the best we can,” Hilliard Division of Police Lt. Tyler Harris said.
Norwich Township Fire Department members also observed the procession.
“For us to be able to just take a simple moment to salute a fallen local hero, it means a tremendous amount for the Norwich Township and the City of Hilliard Police Department and others,” Norwich Township Fire Department Lt. Nate Jennings said.
Details of Sherrer’s funeral have yet to be announced. Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered flags flown at half staff until that day.
Morrow County has about 35,000 residents, and Sherrer had served as a deputy since 2021. He is survived by his parents.
The suspect in the case, Brian Michael Wilson, 53, of Marengo, remains hospitalized with injuries from the shootout and is in the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, which has taken point in the investigation.
Wilson is facing an initial charge of aggravated murder.
